Sheet goods
Lay out cabinet, furniture and panel parts on full sheets and offcuts. Every plan is a guillotine plan, with the cuts in order, the kerf charged at each one, and the grain where you need it.
Free, with no account needed.
How it is solved
On a panel saw or a table saw, every cut runs straight across the piece in front of you, from one edge to the other. NestSmart only produces layouts that can be cut that way, and it records them as a tree of cuts: rip the sheet, crosscut each strip, and so on down to the parts.
To find a good layout, the optimizer tries many combinations of part order, placement rule and split direction, with and without rotating parts, and keeps the best by the priority you choose. Higher effort modes try more combinations and then keep improving the best layout they found.
Each plan is then checked by an independent validator: no overlaps, every part inside its sheet, kerf at every cut, and the area of the parts, the kerf and the waste adding up exactly to the sheet.
What you control
The blade width, entered as you would write it (1/8, 0.125 or 3 mm), charged at every cut. Through the API it can be set per material or per sheet size.
Give the material a grain direction, then lock each part along it or across it, or let a part turn 90° where grain does not matter.
Choose what to minimize first: waste, number of sheets, number of cuts, total blade travel, or cost when your sheets have prices.
Leave a quantity blank to use as many sheets as needed, or give the exact number on the rack. Parts that do not fit are listed with the reason.
Mark the banded edges of each part to get total banding length and cost. Banding never changes a cut size: parts are entered at the size you cut.
Set the smallest piece worth keeping. Leftovers at least that size are marked on the plan, and signed in you can add them to your stock.
A real job
Four sides, two bottoms, two shelves, four stretchers and three drawer fronts for a run of base cabinets. Two sheets cover all fifteen parts; one leftover is large enough to keep under the job’s 12″ × 24″ minimum.
Stock: 48″ × 96″ sheets, 1/8″ kerf. Every figure is read from the solve shown at the top of this page.
